My Secret Lansing | Workshop & Open Mic

Join us for a special writing workshop entitled, “My Secret Lansing,” in which you will experiment with activities designed to evoke your most vivid memories and treasured memories of life in the Lansing Area. Followed by an Open Mike.

Participants will take part in a variety of writing activities that draw upon and activate our memories of a special place, event, person or thing in our hometown—a secret treasure or hidden pleasure somewhere within the Greater Lansing Area. Poet Ruelaine Stokes will serve as the workshop facilitator.

The workshop is the first of two based on this theme and serves to kick off the Poetry Club’s Spring “My Secret Lansing” Writing Contest, which is open to the public and invites writers to describe in poetry or in prose one special and specific place/thing/person/event within the Greater Lansing Area.

The Deadline for the poetry contest will be March 15, 2017.

Burning Desires Poetry Reading

MICA Gallery will host the 22nd annual “Burning Desires: An Afternoon of Love in Performance and Art” since 1993, MICA has hosted a performance event close to Valentine’s Day in celebration of the many aspects of love—comic, profound, erotic and more.

Presenting Poet Line Up:

– MSU Slam Poetry Team

Those wishing to get into the act are invited to participate in an Open Mike. The first 7 participants to sign up are each invited to read one poem (3-5 minutes max.)

We also welcome the Fabulous Heftones (aka Brian Hefferan and Lynn Hershberger Hefferan) to sing 1920 & 30’s inspired love songs!

Refreshments will be served. Free parking on the street and in the large surface lot at the intersection of Grand River Avenue and Turner Street.

Henry Brimmer

During the month of February, Henry Brimmer, professor in the Department of Advertising + Public Relations at MSU, is spearheading a series of events in the MICA Gallery intended to showcase and attract a younger constituency to the area, with the help of many dedicated creative folks.

“We’d like to turn Old Town upside down.. make it New Town, change the demographics a bit…” said Brimmer, “I’m acting as a facilitator, but will be getting out of the way for the younger creatives to determine the direction in which they want to take NEXT to the NEXT NEXT…”

The paintings of Michael Brimmer will be on exhibit. Yes, Michael is Henry Brimmer’s son. The original idea was to have an exhibit of Michael’s work as a high school graduation party… as these things often go, the idea morphed into something larger.

NEXT will open on February 1st at noon for you to peruse the paintings. The band Cicadas will perform at 4 because they can’t wait to get things going. But the official opening, will be at7pm. With finger foods and libations. During the course of the evening, you will get a taste of the broad variety of offerings you can expect throughout the month: the paintings on the walls, comedy, music, poetry, fashion, etc. Prepare for discombobulation; a touch of anarchy. Organized to a point, then let loose. After the scheduled acts, the opportunity for an open jam session, will cap the opening day. So dust off your saxophone or cello… trumpet or triangle.

On February 2nd, Augusta Morrison is bringing Noise Brunch from Detroit. 11 am to 4pm. Noise Brunch is not a band, it is a real brunch w/bagels, cream cheese, and mimosas… to be enjoyed alongside music by Augusta and various young musicians from the motor city.
