Bruce Mackley Sculpture Painting BluesFest 2018 Exhibit

On Loan for limited time during BluesFest

Half painting and half sculpture, Descent is a study of balance, chaos, and harmony. This indutrial mosaic is comprised of more than 20,000 tinted steel decking and framing screws, set into painted pine at varying depths. Its mind-bending execution, vibrant tones and linear composition all merge into a mesmerizing aesthetic.

Choosing such an improbable medium isn’t without consequence, and the final effect can be unexpected and somewhat overwhelming. The main challenge with rendering the art was just sticking with it; this piece (as well as my 2016 effort) didn’t materialize until the final phase. Despite limitations with detail, this medium relies on nuance with tone to succeed. Sprawling, languid and reflective… the dreaming metaphor is ultimately the sum of her parts.
